It was time for the big “push” North, we left Boya lake early as we had a long drive ahead…..Satnav time +2hrs; we always have to add extra time to our Satnav prediction, Delta isn’t always as fast moving and we have to stop regularly. After about an hour’s drive, through forest destroyed by previous wildfires, we reached the British Columbia/Yukon provincial border! We’d made it to the Yukon! A real goal for us both, now all we had to do was drive to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, some 420km away along part of the Alaska highway.
We had 3 days booked in Whitehorse, our campsite was out of town so we caught an Uber into Whitehorse town the first day and spent the day exploring. We were both tied after the long drive the day before and soon found ourselves in a cafe with good coffee and pastries! Refreshed we walked along the Yukon River, meandered through central town and then spent the afternoon in the Whitehorse museum, what a find! So much local history and information in there!
Day 2 in Whitehorse was an admin/laundry/cleaning day, we needed to get campsites booked up for the coming couple of weeks. But day 3 was a hiking day, an 18km hiking day. We headed along the Yukon River to the Miles Canyon Suspension Bridge, sometimes there was a hiking trail and sometimes not, but we got there and it was worth it, a truly impressive canyon with the river running through and under the suspension bridge. The hike back the other side was better marked but hard going and we were glad to get home and have an early night before our drive East along the Alaska highway to the beginning of the Northern Rockies.
