Whistler and Sea to Sky Highway

We left the horse ranch behind and headed Northeast on highway 97c and at Cache Creek turned onto highway 99 (the beginning of the sea to sky highway, we were doing it in reverse) heading Southwest to Whistler. Wow what a road highway 99 is….the views are out of this world spectacular! However the road itself is not in the best condition, it was a rough and bumpy ride at times and the gradients are challenging in a motorhome. But with frequent breaks and swaps of drivers we made it to Whistler, another iconic point on the map we were both excited by! We stayed at a campsite about 45mins outside of Whistler itself and we were thankful for the shaded campground as we were experiencing a heatwave…. however we weren’t so grateful for the mouse company through the night again!

Whistler itself is a resort town and although beautiful we didn’t feel completely relaxed in town, however it is a well oiled machine and parking, eateries, the visitor centre and signage is spot on so we found our way around easily. Our main aim was to experience the Whistler Peak to Peak 360° experience and it exceeded our expectations. We ascended Blackcombe mountain in the gondola and at the top headed straight for the iconic red gondolas that take you from Blackcombe mountain across a wide gorge to Whistler itself. There we walked for about 15mins to reach the Peak Chair lift which took us to the top of Whistler mountain and the Cloudraker Skybridge (slightly scary) and the Ravens Eye. We had stunning 360° views of Whistler village, the surrounding mountain peaks and ranges, lakes, glaciers and forests, it was just stunning. We had prepared ourselves to hike the Half Note Trail, one of the mountain top hikes around Whistler, it was hot and took us longer than it maybe would have done in cooler weather but it was worth it for the views and the sense of achievement.

Leaving whistler we headed towards Vancouver on Highway 99 along the sea to sky highway and marvelled at the views coming from the mountains and in a short 100km being by the sea!
