We left Jasper and headed Southeast on highway 93, better known as the Icefields Parkway. We had been told and read that this road from Jasper to Banff is spectacular; one of the most spectacular roads in the world to drive, with stunning mountain views, waterfalls and glaciers to see….of course the day we drove it there was heavy smoke, rain and low clouds!
In the beginning we were very disappointed, but of course this is a “first world problem” compared to the wildfires. We did stop and visit the Athabasca falls which are incredible; very powerful and beautiful. We also visited the Athabasca Glacier; a marvel to witness. Sadly this glacier, as many others are, is retreating at a rapid rate, and to see the markers over the years showing this rapid retreat really brings home the impact we are having on our planet.
As we continued along the Icefields Parkway the smoke began to clear the clouds lifted a little and we did catch some glimpses of the spectacular views, enough to make us know that we will definitely be back to visit in the future.
